Most people know the advice; however, most people fail to create a poker study routine around that advice.
Review your hands. Use solvers. Watch training videos.
You’ve probably tried all of those things together in a non-structured way with little to no positive impact on your win/loss ratio.
That’s the issue.
While none of those suggestions are inherently bad ideas; however, they can’t stand alone as a poker study routine. Those are simply ideas with no structure behind them.
You might spend a day grinding on solver spots, watch a random video, and then log in for 10 hours at the tables and call that a “study” day.
It isn’t.
A true poker study routine ties all of those concepts together: the spot you study in the morning, the hands you play at lunch, and the review you run at dinner time.
Study → Play → Review → Adjust
That is the total poker experience.
This article provides a basic template for tying those concepts together.
Poker Study Routine Highlights :
Why Do Most Poker Study Routines Fail?
There are two types of players who fail when trying to build a poker study routine.
The Volume Grinder
The Volume Grinder believes that playing more equates to studying.
It doesn’t.
Repeating a poor decision 10,000 times with no way to get immediate feedback creates a reinforcing pattern of behavior that develops a habit rather than a skill.
The Content Binger
The Content Binger is constantly studying with no plan in place.
Solvers on Mondays.
Discord theory on Tuesdays.
A video on Wednesday night.
Massive amounts of information are consumed, but very little is applied.
Both routines have the same broken feedback loop.
True improvement occurs through only one cycle:
Study a concept → play hands where that concept applies → review the outcome of your hands → make adjustments.
If you break any link in that cycle, you’ll stop making forward progress.
“The player who studies 90 minutes of focused poker on one leak will beat the player who spends six separate hours every time.”
— Repeated in every serious coaching circle from Fedor Holz’s Circle of Pro to RYE to Fabian Quoss’s leak-fixing approach.
A true poker study routine does not add more items to your list of things to do.
Rather, a true poker study routine organizes the activities you already know you need to do in the correct order at the correct time.
The Poker Study Schedule: Your Seven Day Template
First, lock in the seven-day template.
Without a seven-day template, daily templates are merely good intentions.
| DAY | Focus |
|---|---|
| Monday | Play + Light Pre/Post-Study |
| Tuesday | Deep Study Only — No Playing |
| Wednesday | Play + Post-Session Review |
| Thursday | Deep Study Only — No Playing |
| Friday | Play |
| Saturday | Play |
| Sunday | Full Rest — Zero Poker, Zero Screens |
Two deep study days.
Four play days.
One full rest day.
Most players immediately drop the rest day when they feel like they are behind.
That is directly opposite of the correct approach.
During rest periods, cognitive learning consolidates; therefore, additional screen time does not assist with that process.
Protect Sunday.
That is not soft advice.
That is how memory formation functions.
Play Day Poker Study Routine — Hour-by-Hour
The sequence of study to play to review is critical.
The sequence creates the theory-to-instinct conversion.
Skip any portion of the sequence and you are merely recording hours.
| TIME | ACTION | WHAT THIS DOES |
|---|---|---|
| 7:30–8:00 | Morning Stretch & Wake Up | Light stretching prior to analytical work. Your brain cannot switch from a sleep state to a solver state. |
| 8:00–8:30 | Hand Review Warm-Up | Review one hand from your previous session. Write down your complete thought process before you even look at the hand. Prediction first, always. |
| 8:30–10:00 | Single Solver Focus Point | One node — Big Blind vs. Button, one board texture, one line. Deep, not wide. Two simple takeaways by the end of your time at the node. |
| 10:00–10:30 | Break | Hard break. Ninety minutes of intense solver work has a significant cognitive toll. Take the break prior to play, not in lieu of it. |
| 10:30–2:00 | Session #1 | Tag every hand you were unsure about. Do not leave the session to check solvers — tag it and continue playing. Mid-session analysis destroys focus and impacts your ability to select games. |
| 2:00–3:00 | Lunch & Recovery | Eat real food and lie down horizontally for 20 minutes. Working memory consolidation occurs during this period. Many athletes utilize this type of recovery. Most poker players waste it. |
| 3:00–5:00 | Session #2 | Only play if you are truly sharp. Grinding while fatigued embeds tired decisions into your pattern recognition. |
| 5:00–6:00 | Post-Session Review | Tag hands only. Predict the solver output before you open it. Maximum of six hands reviewed per session. Reviewing twenty poorly-performed hands is far worse than reviewing five performed correctly every time. |
Off — Protected Evening
Recovery is a portion of your poker study routine, not a departure from it.
One Journal Sentence at Night
Write the item that confused you most today.
Tomorrow’s study subject is whatever was the source of confusion for you in yesterday’s play.
How to Study Poker on Deep Study Days (Tuesday & Thursday)
There is no playing.
There is one objective:
Thoroughly understand one area of poker that is different enough from your current thinking to cause you to act differently at the table.
Not covering new material or consuming new content.
Thoroughly understanding one area of poker.
| TIME | ACTION | WHAT THIS DOES |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Identify Today’s Leak | Re-read your journal. The item that caused you the most confusion in your previous play day is today’s subject. Study the area of poker that costs you the most money, not what you find interesting. |
| Late Morning | Dive Deeper into Solvers | Study one area of poker, both sides. All frequencies, sizings, range compositions, logic behind each decision. Study as deeply as you are able to go, beyond what feels comfortable. |
| Midday | Walk — No Phone | Physically moving away from your computer allows you to clear your prefrontal cortex. Your productivity for the remainder of your day will be higher due to the physical break than it would be due to another hour of screen time. |
| Afternoon | Develop Opponent Strategies | Build the other side of the equation. How does your opponent react to deviations from equilibrium? Understanding both sides of the equation distinguishes average recreational players from high stakes thinkers. |
| Late Afternoon | Drill & Quiz | GTW, Hand2Note quiz mode, or leak tracker flash cards. Theory remains theory unless it is practiced through drill. The only instincts that remain under pressure are the ones that were drilled. |
Evening Study
One Training Video
One video on today’s topic.
Document your heuristic to your study group.
Another brain may find the blind spots you would discover independently in months.
Depth > Variety on Study Days
Studying one area of poker until you fully comprehend it is better than studying 10 areas of poker superficially.
Every serious poker coaching organization that tracks student results reports the same.
What Should I Be Studying in My Poker Study Routine?
Many players are drawn to uncommon or complex concepts because they believe it demonstrates advanced knowledge.
However, they often leak in many situations that occur 30 times per session.
Here is the method to study poker effectively:
First, address the concepts that cost you the most money.
- Big Blind vs. Button — your most common post-flop situation. Most players leak on this situation and are unaware of it.
- Continuation Betting in Single-Raised Pots — If your c-betting strategy is incorrect, everything that follows will be incorrect also.
- Turn Decisions — Where most of the expected value in mid-stakes games is earned and lost. Most players under train on this area.
- River Value Betting & Bluffing — Where bad sizing leads to huge expected value losses at volume.
Fix two of these areas in your poker study routine and your win/loss ratio will increase.
Study ICM edge cases before attempting to fix these areas and you are studying to appear intelligent, not to improve.
3 Ways to Make Any Poker Study Routine Truly Adhere
1. Predict Prior to Opening
Prior to viewing the solver output, write down your prediction of what the correct strategy is — frequencies, sizings, which hands to check.
Then compare.
The difference between your prediction and the solver output is your edge gap in real-time.
Players who only view solvers are memorizing output.
Players who predict first develop the instinct that prevails under real pressure.
2. Create a Leak Tracker
One spreadsheet:
Spot | My Mistake | Correct Play | Simple Rule | Fixed?
A leak is only resolved when you have successfully executed the correct play in live hands three consecutive times — not when you have intellectually understood the concept.
The document you develop is your own personal poker improvement map.
It is worth more than any training subscription because it is developed based upon your individual mistakes.
3. Alternate Between Topics
Rather than practicing one concept for 3 hours, alternate between three related concepts — flop c-bet, turn probe, river decision in single-raised pots.
Alternating topics feels more difficult and produces lower short-term results; however, it produces significantly better long-term retention and in-game implementation of those concepts.
Almost no player incorporates that into his/her poker study routine.
That is your edge.
How to Study Poker Effectively — Direct Answers
How many hours should I study poker?
| PLAYER TYPE | STUDY TIME |
| Casual player | 30–60 minutes daily |
| Serious grinder | 1–2 hours on play days |
| Full-time pro | 4–5 hours on deep study days |
Consistency beats volume.
A consistent 60-minute poker study routine each day — a consistent study-play-review-loop — beats random 3-hour study sessions twice a week.
Log in to study each day. Complete the loop.
When should I play online poker?
In the United States and Europe, recreational traffic peaks:
- Fridays after 6 PM
- Saturdays after 12 PM
- Sundays after NFL or European football
Selecting games is a post-table decision — a part of your poker study schedule.
Even if your poker study routine is excellent, selecting the toughest available games negates its benefits.
The Poker Study Routine Is the Edge
Improvement in poker skills does not result from a singular “breakthrough” session or a heavy week of grueling hours.
Improvement results from a study routine that is:
- consistent
- organized
- connected
Focused study → real play → review → rest.
Repeat the cycle until the improvements compound.
This is what this poker study routine offers you:
Not only what to study, but when to study, in what order, for how long, and when to stop.
Players who adhere to a consistent poker study routine improve faster and continue to improve.
Results are demonstrated at the table, where they matter.
Now you know how to study poker.
Run this poker study routine for six weeks before making any changes.
Trust the loop.
Work the routine.
That is the entire task.
Studying is important, but even more important for your bankroll is finding weaker opponents to play against. The bulk of the recreational players in today’s online poker world can be found on club-poker apps.
