You earn 1,000 chips and get 200 in rakeback. So your net profit is 1,200.

Is that right? Not always. Occasionally in poker apps there’s a tax/bonus adjustment. With a 10% tax/bonus, your final profit will now be 1,080.

When you’re having a bad week, this same tax/rebate formula can provide you with free chips on top of rakeback.

That’s how poker app tax/rebate works. Some clubs do the calculation weekly. Others factor it into the chip exchange ratio.

What Is Poker App Tax/Rebate?

Poker app tax/rebate adjusts positive wins and provides part of negative wins as a bonus.

By “tax,” we mean an adjustment made by the club or association. This is in addition to the federal and state income taxes you’ll pay on your winnings.

The concept is very easy to understand:

Result After RakebackAdjustment Applied
Positive resultTax taken out
Negative resultBonus given for part of the loss

Not every club has this type of arrangement. Within the same association, players could be offered different terms.

How the Weekly Calculation Is Performed

For this poker app tax/rebate model:

Table Win/Loss + Rakeback = Result before Adjustment

Losses are considered negative. Your table result includes any rake that was paid off during play, so don’t deduct that again.

Winning Week: 10% Tax Example

ComponentAmount
Table Winnings+1,000 Chips
Rakeback+200 Chips
Total Combined Result+1,200 Chips
Tax Deducted (10%)120 Chips
Net Profit1,080 Chips

Losing Week: 10% Rebate Example

ComponentAmount
Table Loss-1,000 Chips
Rakeback+200 Chips
Total Combined Loss-800 Chips
Bonus Added (Rebate)80 Chips
Net Loss720 Chips

You get rakeback of 200 chips in addition to the 80 chip bonus. The bonus doesn’t convert the loss into a win; however, it makes the loss smaller.

First add rakeback. Next determine if you are profitable or unprofitable.

For example: losing $100 at the tables and getting rakeback of $150 puts you $50 ahead. Taking 10% of the profit (a tax) removes 5 chips, leaving a $45 profit.

The above examples are based on using win/loss plus rakeback. Confirm which basis is being used as some deals use other bases.

Alternative: Convert the Chip Ratio

Poker app tax/rebate can also be implemented through the value of each chip.

Rather than a 1:1 ratio, a club may use:

  • 1 Chip = 0.95
  • 1 Chip = 0.90
  • 1 Chip = 0.80

As stated earlier, you get more chips upfront when you make a deposit. However, when you withdraw your chips, they are converted at the same reduced value.

The reduction is included in the conversion, making it unnecessary to perform a separate weekly tax/rebate calculation.

Example: 1 Chip = 0.80

You deposit $100 and receive 125 chips.

You withdraw those same 125 chips without playing and you receive $100 back.

Win Scenario:

Now let us say you win another $100 (including rakeback).

Your new balance is 225 chips:

225 chips x 0.80 = $180 withdrawn

Less your initial deposit of $100:

Your profit is $80.

Loss Scenario:

Had you lost another $100 (after rakeback), your new balance would be 25 chips:

25 chips x 0.80 = $20 withdrawn

Minus your original deposit of $100:

Your loss is $80.

How Conversion Ratios Compare to Percentage Adjustments

More chips when you top-up. Less per chip when you withdraw.

Using the same number of chips, this achieves the same percent impact as a 20% adjustment:

Chip Profit/LossWith 0.80 ConversionEquivalent Adjustment
+100 chips profit$80 received20% reduction
-100 chips loss$80 cost20% reduction

With a conversion ratio of 1 chip = 0.95, a profit or loss of 100 chips equates to 95—the equivalent of a 5% adjustment.

This version of poker app tax/rebate operates when the conversion ratios are the same for all deposits, withdrawals, and rakeback. Different conversion rates will produce a different outcome. Also, it changes the actual stakes. For example, with a conversion ratio of 0.8, a game at 1/2 chip is equal to $0.8/$1.60 dollars.

Why Clubs Use This System

The primary reason for poker app tax/rebate is to create an incentive for recreational players to participate. More importantly, it creates a barrier for powerful regulars from dominating games.

Players that are losing and depositing receive a bigger bonus boost to keep the games going. They receive more playing time with their additional chips. Positive settlements reduce the amount of funds drawn from the ecosystem by taxing withdrawals from winners.

Many large associations utilize this incentive to motivate their agents to recruit recreational players rather than just attracting strong players who consistently take money from them.

The goal is to create a softer, sustainable environment for games. The system itself cannot assure quality games.

Who Determines the Percentage?

Poker app tax/rebate can be set at whatever percentage desired—including higher percentages such as 3%, 10%, or even 30%.

Within an independent private club, the owner of the club determines the terms of poker app tax/rebate. Union management determines the terms that participating clubs will be able to offer their members. Your agent then determines how those terms will affect you.

The percentage matters greatly. For example, on a win of 1,200 chips:

Adjustment RateChips Removed from 1,200 Win
10%120 chips
30%360 chips

Does the Agent Have to Pass It On?

Poker app tax/rebate typically goes to agents and affiliates first. Poker app tax/rebate does not automatically come with every player’s agreement.

Agents have several options:

  • Pass both tax on wins and rebates on losses to players
  • Cover the agent’s end of the winning-week tax themselves and save the agent’s share of losing-week bonuses, while allowing players a separate rakeback arrangement
  • Keep the rebate portion as part of their agreement with the club, especially if most players are recreational

What your agent agrees upon with their club will not necessarily be the same as what you agree upon.

Additionally, you should inquire about whether poker app tax/rebate is computed individually on your performance or collectively on the performance of a group of players. Those are different types of arrangements.

Why Clubs Within the Same Union Charge Differently

There are two common reasons why poker app tax/rebate may be charged differently among clubs in the same association.

Reason 1: Agents/Clubs Transmit Different Terms

One club may send both the tax and rebate portion to players. Another may keep into the tax but retain the rebate portions, especially if most of their players are recreational.

Reason 2: Associations May Assign Different Rates

Winners tend to attract higher rates than losers. The objective is to maintain financial equilibrium throughout the association by taxing high-winning clubs at higher levels. When the rate applies equally in either direction (regardless if it’s a winning or losing week), a higher rate means greater rebate amounts when your weekly settlement is negative.

Are Similar Incentives Employed by Regular Poker Sites?

While there isn’t anything identical in the way private poker apps employ poker app tax/rebate, there are alternatives utilized in other areas. There are reward programs where bonuses are determined by player activity and contributions to games.

For instance, GGPoker formerly utilized Fish Buffet and rewarded players’ participation in various activities through points. These were generated based on Table Behavior and Deposit History prior to being replaced by Ocean Rewards effective January 2026.

Fish Buffet and Ocean Rewards differ from poker app tax/rebate in several important aspects. While neither rewards program employs poker app tax/rebate directly, nor states that commercial sites replicate their models, they serve as useful comparisons to understand poker app tax/rebate concepts better.

Prior to Depositing: What to Confirm

Before agreeing to accept poker app tax/rebate, confirm the following with your agent:

QuestionWhat to Verify
RateWhat percentage will be applied?
Calculation BaseIs win/loss/rakeback being used or something else?
MethodAre adjustments done on a weekly basis or does it involve converting chip ratios permanently?
BonusDo you qualify for rebates when you experience a losing week?
TaxWill you be paying it or will your agent absorb it?
Settlement TypeIs it your individual settlement or a collective group settlement?

Request one winning scenario and one losing scenario from your agent. Additionally, if your club utilizes an established chip conversion process (such as converting all chips), ask how many chips your deposit purchases and how many chips those same chips return upon withdrawal.
