WSOP Academy could be the most interesting attempt in years to get new players to feel good about learning poker — and not just feeling like you’re studying poker.
Unlike a traditional library filled with hundreds of hours of strategy videos, the WSOP Academy app provides a vibrant learning path. Each question answered opens up the possibility for a lesson to be unlocked. Each challenge completed earns points (XP). Every step forward on the Learning Path moves you higher on a world-wide leader board. And, when you’ve progressed enough to achieve a level, your poker iq increases. Think Duolingo + poker training app = WSOP Academy.
I have been able to spend time inside the app. I have taken the WSOP poker iq test. I have gone through the entire learning path. And, I’ve experienced how the rankings, lessons, and progression systems operate.
Some of the features that will appeal to beginner players include:
- a variety of ways to learn about poker
- gamification elements (such as earning XP)
- competition (via leader boards)
However, serious players should consider several limitations associated with the poker iq score before considering it the definitive indicator of their poker skills.
What is WSOP Academy?
WSOP Academy is the official World Series of poker training application. The application was introduced in 2026, and is available for download via both the Apple ios App Store and Google Play store. The application is linked to the overall WSOP ecosystem, requiring registration with a gs pass account to use. At present, the application is described on Google Play as an interactive poker learning system based on lessons, challenges, XP earned, and a poker iq score.
Do not confuse this with earlier versions of World Series of Poker Academy programs.
Previous versions of the program included live poker schools that were started in 2007. In addition, previous versions included an interactive version of the academy that was launched in 2010. The 2026 version represents a new iteration of the concept. The newer version focuses on being mobile first, gamified, and includes shorter, interactive exercises compared to prior versions.
The application was launched during the 2026 WSOP period and consists of 10 units covering poker fundamentals through more strategic topics. Coverage of independent launches confirm that the path begins with poker basics/rule explanations/concepts and builds toward preflop strategies, flop play strategies, turn decision-making and exploiting opportunities.
Based upon my testing experience, some examples of later courses include:
- tournament fundamentals
- pre-flop strategy guide
- all the way to Unit 10 — find exploit opportunities.
Progression within the units is important. WSOP Academy appears to target new and improving players; however, it will not simply explain that a flush beats a straight.
Poker IQ — the hook
The feature that WSOP is emphasizing most is poker iq.
Upon entering the academy, you can take an adaptive test designed to measure poker knowledge, speed, accuracy and decision-making. Questions are timed and difficulty adjusts depending on performance. Additionally, your highest verified poker iq can be tied directly to your official WSOP.com profile.
The Poker Quiz is separated into categories and covers a wide array of situations that can happen on the poker table, as well as some general questions that test your skills of observation, logic, and mathematics.
Connecting to a player profile
This aspect of connecting a player’s profile to poker iq is smart.
Poker players generally enjoy competing against other poker players. WSOP has created a metric that allows them to compete. In my testing experience, I achieved a score of 97 poker iq. This then became permanently visible at the top of the academy interface, and I am now visible on the global standings list.
The test is not limited to “what beats what?” questions.
Examples of questions I received during testing included memory-based exercises (e.g., remembering cards and pot information), common poker strategy questions, advanced-type questions (one example had me rank different bluff-catching opportunities from best-to-worst: e.g., Villain over-bluffs vs. under-bluffs; whether my hand blocked value or bluffs).
This is actual poker theory.
WSOP states that poker iq evaluates knowledge, decision-making under pressure, speed, and accuracy — rather than just treating poker iq as a trivia score. However, there are limits to a player’s ability to connect a single number to their actual skill set. A poker iq of 130 does not imply that a person crushes $5/$10 cash games; similarly, a lower score doesn’t suggest that a person is bad at poker. Live reads, population knowledge, developing ranges, managing bankrolls, controlling tilt, and executing decisions for six hours are tough to fit into one number.
While poker iq can function as an effective benchmark and means of tracking player progress — it is much less capable as an accurate measurement of every player’s true poker abilities.
Learning poker has never been more engaging
To put it bluntly — this is where WSOP Academy truly shines.
Traditional poker training suffers from poor retention rates. Watching a 45 minute video about turn barreling can be beneficial — but it remains a 45 minute video about turn barreling. Most recreational players won’t watch it consistently.
WSOP Academy converts learning into smaller-scale experiences.
Each time you finish an activity — a character responds. You get progress. Another stage becomes accessible. You earn XP. You inch closer to unlocking the next unit.
Streaks exist; checkpoints become locked; worldwide rankings exist.
Throughout my test session, the learn screen always displayed poker iq, XP earned, and Day streak at the top. The leader board area displays the top 5 highest poker iq scores in the world — followed by your position further down in the ranks.
As stated in the official app description, XP earned is based on completion of lessons/challenges/etc… While ranks allow players to compete against friends/country/WSOP Academy community members.
Cosmetic? Perhaps. But it fundamentally alters the experience provided by the product.
Opening WSOP Academy doesn’t feel like you’re accessing a poker course.
It feels like you’re playing a Game where becoming better at poker is your objective.
Daniel Negreanu & WSOP characters
Additionally, WSOP made sure the academy didn’t resemble yet another dry educational product.
Poker personalities and animated characters populate the course. Daniel Negreanu is heavily featured in the application. According to WSOP’s website promoting interactive coaching and decision-feedback featuring Daniel Negreanu.
Challengers also exist.
Eventually players will have an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a showdown style challenge format. Free users are currently given access to Finn’s challenges. Users who subscribe to WSOP+ can unlock challenges featuring other prominent personalities such as Maria Ho/Michael Mizrachi/Daniel Negreanu/premier members will have access to Sharky as the challenger with the greatest expertise in the academy.
Don’t overlook ‘coaching’ provided by Daniel Negreanu too literally.
By this I mean do not interpret ‘coaching with Daniel Negreanu’ as having Daniel review your hand history privately or jump on a zoom meeting with you.
It’s essentially interactive training utilizing his character and guidance for poker.
That’s important.
Gamifying coaching works very well. Providing individual coaching from a high-level professional who studies your database does not work so well.
How much WSOP Academy costs ?
Another positive is how much WSOP is providing prior to charging for anything.
| Plan | Access to WSOP Academy |
|---|---|
| Free | -$0/month poker iq, complete curriculum, each unit/lesson/exam — Finn’s challenges — 10 high roller hands per Day |
| WSOP+ basic | -$9.99/month Negreanu / Ho / Mizrachi pro Challengers + 50 high roller hands per Day |
| WSOP+ premier | -$49.99/month Sharky challenger + unlimited high roller hands |
These are current US prices shown by WSOP. Paid memberships offer many advantages outside WSOP Academy — therefore these subscription prices shouldn’t be evaluated solely as poker-training subscriptions.
In doing so — this creates a surprisingly powerful free WSOP Academy plan.
All ten units/courses aren’t locked until Premium purchase status is reached. The primary source of revenue for paid memberships relates to additional Challengers and increased amounts of simulated high roller table hands playable per Day.
This represents a far superior business model for beginners than acquiring a “free” poker app and discovering that unit 2 requires payment via credit card.
The High Roller Table may offer value beyond lessons
The High Roller Table is one feature worth keeping an eye on as it could ultimately surpass lessons in terms of value offered.
According to WSOP site description:
The High Roller Table allows users to apply what they have learned in simulated hands — without experiencing pressure from real-time gameplay.
This is significant because poker strategy cannot be adequately studied simply by memorizing definitions alone. To study poker strategy effectively you must see concepts repeated numerous times (i.e., recognizing a specific range should bluff less often on a particular river is one thing). Seeing that situation occur repeatedly and actually taking action appropriately is another.
Where WSOP Academy fails to meet expectations
Obviously there is one major limitation; serious poker study will be far beyond the depth of this app right now.
Professional cash-game grinders searching for solver outputs, node locking, database population analysis, detailed preflop ranges or thousands of filtered hands are not likely to substitute WSOP Academy for dedicated study software.
This is simply not what the product is designed to accomplish.
Beginners, recreational players, intermediate level players who know how to play poker but have never established a systematic study routine would find WSOP Academy the most effective resource.
Additionally, subjectivity exists in poker strategy questions. There is no universally correct answer in situations where the variables involved in hand selection (ranges, stack depths, rake, player tendencies and tournament incentives) begin to alter the possible action(s).
An early reviewer of WSOP Academy in the App Store noted exactly this type of issue with his review stating “answers can vary depending on your individual style.” A second reviewer requested more instruction prior to being assessed. These two reviews represent only a small sample size. At the time I was checking the U.S. Apple store, the total number of public reviews available were only three so it would be absurd to consider these two reviews representative of community consensus.
Which brings US to the last weakness of WSOP Academy: it’s new.
At the time of writing Google Play showed approximately 1000+ downloads and updates have been made regularly throughout the summer and into September.
You should expect this product to continue to evolve.
Is WSOP Academy Worth Using?
Absolutely — because you get to utilize virtually everything important for free.
As a complete beginner, WSOP Academy represents one of the simplest ways to introduce yourself to structured poker training we have ever seen. The application eliminates the intimidation associated with opening a solver or registering for an enormous training library.
As an improving player, the value shifts toward the Poker IQ test, strategy questions, high-roller practice hands and later sections dealing with topics like exploitation.
As an experienced grinder, it serves as nothing more than a side tool compared to primary study environments.
This is probably the best way to assess it.
WSOP Academy does not need to surpass professional solvers or advanced coaching platforms. WSOP Academy’s greatest opportunity lies elsewhere: getting people who currently do not train/study poker at all to spend 10 or 15 minutes learning something every day.
In doing so, WSOP may have created something truly innovative.
With Poker IQ, short lessons on poker, XP, daily streaks, global rankings, Daniel Negreanu, simulated hand games and WSOP-related prizes, the application has provided players with a reason to return.
Poker training has been becoming more powerful for years.
WSOP Academy is trying to make it more addictive.
And that may be harder problem to solve than ever before for most poker players.
